Japan Launches Intelligence Panel to Strengthen National Capabilities
Takaichi made the remarks after chairing the inaugural meeting of a 17-member expert panel focused on improving intelligence capabilities. She also emphasized the need to develop a “National Intelligence Strategy.”
“It is extremely important for our country to swiftly and accurately grasp threats that could potentially jeopardize our national interests, as well as the lives and safety of our citizens,” Takaichi said on social media.
The panel includes specialists from academia, the media and business sectors, alongside government officials.
Takaichi highlighted concerns including “cyberattacks, illicit leakage of advanced technologies involving foreign intelligence operatives” and the “spread of disinformation.”
“It is difficult to grasp the full picture without integrating and analyzing information gathered across multiple domains, such as diplomacy, defense, public security, the economy, and technology,” she said.
Japan established the National Intelligence Council, chaired by Takaichi, along with its secretariat, the National Intelligence Bureau, in July after legislation establishing the framework was passed in May.
