Bangladesh Foreign Minister Set for China Visit to Deepen Ties

(MENAFN) China announced Monday that Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman will undertake a three-day official visit to Beijing beginning Tuesday, as both nations push to further cement their expanding diplomatic and economic partnership.

The visit comes at the formal invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, according to a statement issued by China's Foreign Ministry — marking Rahman's third overseas bilateral visit since assuming office in February, when the Bangladesh Nationalist Party swept into government.

The two nations have steadily elevated their relationship, upgrading bilateral ties in 2024 to a "comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership" — reflecting years of deepening engagement across trade, infrastructure, and diplomacy.

China's Foreign Ministry offered a warm characterization of the relationship: "China and Bangladesh have long been each other's friends and close neighbors." It further noted that bilateral ties have "enjoyed sustained and steady progress and delivered tangibly for the two peoples," while reaffirming that Beijing attaches "high importance" to its relationship with Dhaka.

The numbers underscore that closeness. China has held its position as Bangladesh's largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years, with bilateral trade reaching approximately $17.35 billion in 2024 — a figure heavily weighted in Beijing's favor. Last year also marked the 50th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Through Rahman's visit, Beijing said it aims to deepen political trust, broaden cross-sector cooperation, accelerate Belt and Road Initiative collaboration, and further advance the two nations' comprehensive strategic partnership — a framework that gained formal shape in 2016, when Dhaka joined the Belt and Road Initiative and Beijing pledged roughly $24 billion in loans and aid.
