Japan Holds Snap Election Amid Heavy Snow

(MENAFN) Voters across Japan are facing heavy snowfall to participate in a snap election called by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, whose coalition is forecast to secure a decisive victory, according to reports.

This marks Japan’s first mid-winter election in 36 years, as the country typically schedules polls during milder weather. Takaichi called the election shortly after winning her party’s leadership contest, seeking a fresh public mandate.

Polls indicate that the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), in coalition with the populist Japanese Innovation Party, could win up to 300 of the 465 seats in the Lower House. This would represent a significant recovery for the LDP, which lost its longstanding coalition ally and parliamentary majority due to corruption scandals and rising costs.

After two previous LDP prime ministers resigned amid plunging approval ratings, Takaichi has emerged as a popular figure with voters. Her platform, which includes tax cuts and subsidies, appears to have resonated with the public. Critics, however, question whether increased spending can effectively revive Japan’s sluggish economy, given that government debt remains among the highest in the developed world.

Observers note that Takaichi’s personal popularity could boost the coalition’s performance, though inclement weather may suppress turnout, particularly in northern and eastern regions. Early voting saw nearly 4.6 million participants, down 2.5% from the 2024 election, a decline attributed to the snow.

Several regions, including Niigata Prefecture in central Japan, experienced heavy snowfall on Sunday. The transport ministry reported closures of 37 train lines and 58 ferry routes, with 54 flights canceled as of Sunday morning. Even Tokyo saw rare snow as citizens headed to polling stations.

A long-time admirer of former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Takaichi has cultivated an “Iron Lady” persona. A known ally of Japan’s late former PM Shinzo Abe, she promotes strong defense and nationalist policies similar to those championed by Abe.
