China-Canada Ties Stronger as Carney Set for Beijing Visit
“The sound and steady development of ties (between China and Canada) serves common interests of the two countries and people, and is conducive to world peace, development stability, and prosperity,” said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning during a briefing in Beijing.
Carney is set to arrive Wednesday for a four-day official mission, according to Mao. The trip was extended at the invitation of Premier Li Qiang.
Mao emphasized that Beijing expects the visit to help both governments “step up dialogue and communication, enhance political trust, expand practical cooperation, properly handle differences, address each other’s concerns, and consolidate turnout in ties.”
Carney’s office earlier this month issued a statement declaring: "Canada's new government is moving our economy from reliance to resilience -- building our strength at home, working to double our non-U.S. exports, and attracting massive new investment."
During the visit, Carney will meet President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and senior officials as well as business leaders. The Canadian government said talks will focus on "trade, energy, agriculture, and international security."
"This visit marks the first visit to China by a Canadian Prime Minister since 2017," the statement added.
Diplomatic relations between Canada and China were established in 1970. Bilateral trade reached approximately $67 billion by the end of 2024.
