German Chancellor Merz Set for Talks in India
The German leader's aircraft arrived in Ahmedabad, located in the western state of Gujarat, where preparations are underway for a high-stakes meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled for later in the day, according to Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal, who posted the update on X.
"India and Germany are celebrating 75 years of India-Germany diplomatic ties and 25 years of the India-Germany strategic partnership," Jaiswal stated, emphasizing that the meeting with Modi on Monday, "will further strengthen India-Germany partnership."
The January 12-13 diplomatic engagement represents Merz's debut official journey to India since assuming the chancellorship, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed in a prior statement.
During the 48-hour visit, bilateral discussions are expected to center on deepening economic ties through enhanced trade and investment frameworks, advancing technological cooperation, strengthening educational exchanges and workforce mobility initiatives, while simultaneously broadening strategic partnerships in defense and security sectors, the ministry's statement indicated.
