China calls on UK to remove sanctions on Chinese entities
(MENAFN) China has lodged strong objections with the United Kingdom following London’s announcement of sanctions against 11 Chinese companies accused of supporting Russia’s energy sector and providing equipment vital to Moscow’s defense operations, according to reports.
“China firmly opposes these sanctions,” a spokesperson from the Chinese Embassy in the UK stated on Wednesday, calling on the UK to “immediately” revoke the measures.
The UK imposed the sanctions on both Russian and Chinese firms as part of its efforts to increase pressure on the Kremlin over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. British Treasury chief Rachel Reeves explained that the government’s action is “targeted” at companies in India and China that continue to facilitate the global supply of Russian oil.
Beijing criticized the move, asserting that the UK’s sanctions are unilateral and lack a foundation in international law. The embassy spokesperson said they “undermine the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.”
Regarding the Ukraine conflict, the spokesperson added, “On the Ukraine crisis, China has upheld an objective and impartial position, remained committed to promoting peace talks, and strictly regulated the export of dual-use items in accordance with laws and regulations.”
The embassy emphasized that normal business exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and Russian companies should not be disrupted, stating that Beijing “firmly rejects any attempt at blame-shifting or smearing.”
“We urge the UK to immediately rectify its wrongdoing and revoke the sanctions against the relevant Chinese entities. Any action that harms China's interests will be met with a firm response,” the spokesperson concluded.
