China Rebukes U.S. “Talks and Threats” Tactics
Responding to U.S. allegations that China delayed a scheduled phone discussion on recent rare earth export controls, a spokesperson for China’s Commerce Ministry stressed, “The US side cannot seek talks on one hand while threatening to introduce new restrictive measures on the other. This is not the right way to get along with China,” according to a state-run news agency.
The official highlighted that China had already informed the U.S. ahead of time through a bilateral export control dialogue mechanism and that both nations had engaged in working-level consultations as recently as Monday.
Reaffirming Beijing’s openness to continued dialogue, the ministry urged the U.S. to adopt a “balanced and constructive approach” in managing trade disputes.
Tensions escalated last Friday when U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese goods and to restrict exports of “critical software” starting November 1, following China’s move to tighten rare earth mineral export regulations.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian rejected Trump’s tariff threats on Monday, saying such actions were “not the right way” to handle bilateral relations.
Yet, in a surprising shift on Sunday, Trump tweeted a message assuring that trade tensions with China would be resolved, signaling a potential thaw after the earlier threats.
China’s latest rare earth export measures include stricter controls on processing and manufacturing technologies, along with a ban on cooperating with foreign companies without prior government approval.
