China urges US to collaborate to rebuild stable economic ties
(MENAFN) China on Tuesday cautioned the United States against combining dialogue with threats, calling on Washington to collaborate with Beijing to stabilize economic ties, according to reports.
A spokesperson from China’s Commerce Ministry responded to claims that Beijing had delayed a scheduled phone call on rare earth export controls, stating, “The US side cannot seek talks on one hand while threatening to introduce new restrictive measures on the other. This is not the right way to get along with China.”
The spokesperson stressed that China had informed the US ahead of time through existing bilateral export control channels and noted that both sides conducted working-level discussions as recently as Monday. Beijing reiterated its willingness to engage in talks while urging the US to adopt a fair and constructive approach to managing trade differences.
The backdrop of these warnings includes US President Donald Trump’s announcement on Friday that he would impose 100% tariffs on Chinese goods and restrict exports of “critical software” starting November 1, following China’s introduction of rare earth export limits.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, also countered Trump’s tariff threats on Monday, saying such measures were “not the right way” to handle bilateral relations.
Nevertheless, Trump surprised observers on Sunday by suggesting that the trade tensions with China would be resolved, offering a conciliatory tone just days after his earlier threats.
Beijing has tightened controls on rare earth exports, restricting processing and manufacturing technologies and barring foreign company cooperation without government authorization, intensifying trade friction between the two nations.
