India rejects claims of funding Russia, says West does more deals with Russia
Western nations have frequently pressured New Delhi over its energy dealings with Russia. US officials have accused India of “effectively” funding Russia’s war in Ukraine through its substantial oil purchases. India firmly rejects these claims, arguing that its imports are driven by national interests and the need to provide affordable energy to its population.
In a statement provided to a news agency on Monday, an Indian government spokesperson emphasized that these oil imports have also helped stabilize global oil prices. “Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,” the spokesperson said, describing the targeting of India as “unjustified and unreasonable.”
India also highlighted the ongoing trade between Western countries and Russia, despite their repeated promises to cut economic ties. “Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion,” the spokesperson noted.
Citing statistics, India pointed out that the EU traded €67.5 billion (over $78 billion) worth of goods with Russia in 2024, along with $18.7 billion USD in services in 2023—figures far surpassing India’s total trade with Moscow. European imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) reached a record 16.5 million tons last year, with commerce extending beyond energy to fertilizers, chemicals, steel, and machinery.
US President Donald Trump warned on Monday that he would “substantially” increase tariffs on India, accusing the country of buying “massive amounts” of Russian oil and reselling it for “big profits.” He had previously threatened to impose 100% tariffs on nations trading with Russia unless Moscow agrees to a major peace agreement with Ukraine.
India further pointed out that the US continues to import crucial Russian resources, including uranium for nuclear energy, palladium used in electric vehicles, as well as various chemicals and fertilizers.
