Japan Records Increase in Supermarket Rice Prices
(MENAFN) The average retail price for rice at supermarkets across Japan climbed to 3,625 yen (roughly 24.6 USD) per 5 kg in the week ending July 27, breaking a 10-week streak of stable or falling prices, official figures reveal.
Between July 21 and July 27, rice prices rose by 40 yen compared to the prior week, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
This uptick is linked to a deceleration in the government’s release of stockpiled rice, which had previously exerted downward pressure on market rates.
Blended rice varieties, typically containing government stockpiles, also experienced a price increase, averaging 3,133 yen per 5 kg—a 45 yen rise from the previous week, the data indicated.
The ministry tracks and reports weekly rice pricing based on data collected from about 1,000 supermarkets nationwide.
