India plans to buy hundreds of missiles after Pakistan clash

(MENAFN) India’s Defense Ministry is reportedly preparing to acquire 300 additional missiles for its Russian-made S-400 surface-to-air systems, aiming to replenish stockpiles following its military confrontation with Pakistan in May. According to reports, the ministry plans to issue a formal “request for proposal” to Russia’s Rosoboronexport, with the deal expected to cost around $1.2 billion.

Sources indicate that the purchase could be finalized before March 2026, pending approval from two Indian government committees. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has reportedly already given his endorsement.

During the May operation, codenamed Operation Sindoor, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly commended the S-400 systems’ performance. “Platforms like the S-400 have given unprecedented strength to the country,” he said while addressing troops in front of the air-defense system. “A strong security shield has become the identity of India.”

Reports also suggest that New Delhi is considering acquiring the Pantsir short- and medium-range air-defense system, which can complement the S-400 to create a layered defense against aircraft, drones, missiles, and rockets.

Defense cooperation with Russia is expected to be a key topic during President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to New Delhi for an annual summit with Modi in early December. India and Russia have maintained a defense partnership dating back to the early 1960s, and this proposed acquisition continues that long-standing collaboration.

In addition, India has encouraged international defense firms to collaborate with domestic manufacturers to support the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, which aims to strengthen local defense production while maintaining strong strategic ties with key partners.
